What Is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile matching game that uses the beautiful 144-tile set from the traditional Chinese game of Mahjong. Unlike the four-player game it's derived from, Mahjong Solitaire challenges you to clear a board of stacked tiles by finding and removing matching pairs.

The game features tiles arranged in a multi-layered formation, typically resembling a turtle or pyramid shape. Tiles are stacked on top of each other, and you can only select tiles that are "free" — meaning they have no tile directly on top and at least one side (left or right) is open. The goal is to remove all 144 tiles from the board.

How to Play Mahjong Solitaire

Find matching pairs. Click on a free tile to select it (highlighted with a gold border), then click on another free tile that matches. If the two tiles match, they are removed from the board. Most tiles must match exactly — same suit and same number — but Season tiles match any other Season, and Flower tiles match any other Flower.

Work from the outside in. Since tiles on higher layers block those below, you generally want to work from the top and edges inward. Pay attention to which tiles are blocking others, and try to keep the board balanced rather than clearing one side entirely.

Use your power-ups wisely. You have limited Shuffles (rearrange tiles), Hints (highlight a valid pair), and Undos (return last removed pair). Save these for when you truly need them, as each one reduces your score.

Strategies and Tips

Prioritize tiles on higher layers. Removing tiles from the top layers opens up more options below. Always scan the highest layers first for matching pairs before looking at the base.

Keep the board balanced. Avoid removing all tiles from one side of the board. An unbalanced board can leave you with blocked tiles and no valid moves. Try to remove pairs symmetrically when possible.

Look ahead before matching. Just because two tiles can match doesn't mean you should match them immediately. Consider what tiles they're blocking — sometimes it's better to wait and match a different pair first to open up more of the board.

Watch the pair counter. The number of available pairs is shown in the header. If it drops to zero, you're stuck and will need to Shuffle or start a new game.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mahjong Solitaire?

Mahjong Solitaire is a single-player tile matching game using traditional Mahjong tiles. Unlike the multiplayer Mahjong game, Solitaire involves removing matching pairs of free tiles from a stacked layout until the board is cleared.

How do I know which tiles I can click?

A tile is 'free' when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. Free tiles appear at full brightness, while blocked tiles are dimmed. Only free tiles can be selected for matching.

How do Season and Flower tiles match?

Season tiles (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter) can match with any other Season tile. Similarly, Flower tiles (Plum, Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo) match with any other Flower tile. All other tiles must match exactly — same suit and same number.

Is every game solvable?

Games are generated using a reverse-placement algorithm that ensures at least one solution path exists. However, the choices you make during play can lead to unsolvable board states. Use Shuffle to rearrange remaining tiles if you get stuck.
