Understanding Sales Commission Structures

Sales commission is the variable component of a salesperson's compensation tied directly to revenue generated. According to the Sales Management Association, companies spend between 5% and 20% of revenue on sales compensation, making commission structure design one of the most impactful decisions a sales organization makes. The right plan motivates top performers, aligns rep behavior with company goals, and drives predictable revenue growth.

A flat rate structure is the simplest: every dollar of revenue earns the same commission percentage. It works well for transactional sales with consistent deal sizes. A tiered structure pays increasing rates as a rep hits higher revenue brackets, rewarding sustained performance. Accelerators add a multiplier above quota, creating exponential upside for top performers. And draw against commission provides a guaranteed minimum income while a rep ramps up, with the draw deducted from future earnings.

Our calculator lets you model all of these structures, compare them side by side, and project your total on-target earnings (OTE) across best, target, and worst case scenarios. Whether you're a sales rep evaluating a job offer or a manager designing compensation plans, this tool shows exactly how different structures impact take-home pay at every revenue level.

How to Use This Commission Calculator

1. Create a commission plan. Click β€œ+ New” in the sidebar, name your plan, choose a structure type, and configure the rates. You can save multiple plans and switch between them instantly.

2. Calculate single deals. Enter a deal value and see the commission breakdown instantly. Enable team split to divide commission among 2–5 reps with custom percentages.

3. Track monthly performance. The Multi-Deal tab lets you enter multiple deals and see how commission compounds as your running total crosses tier thresholds or quota levels.

4. Project total earnings. The OTE Projector combines your base salary with projected commission across target, best, and worst case revenue scenarios, showing monthly earnings breakdowns.

5. Compare offers. Evaluating two comp plans? The Compare tab charts both structures across a $0–$500K revenue range and finds the exact crossover point where one plan becomes more lucrative.

Frequently Asked Questions

What commission structures does this calculator support?

Five types: Flat Rate (fixed percentage on all sales), Tiered (different rates at different revenue brackets), Accelerator (base rate with a bonus multiplier above quota), Draw Against Commission (guaranteed draw deducted from earned commission), and Custom Formula (user-defined brackets and rates). You can save multiple structures and switch between them instantly.

How does the OTE (On-Target Earnings) projector work?

Enter your base salary and projected revenue for target, best case, and worst case scenarios. The projector calculates your total compensation (base + commission) for each scenario, shows monthly breakdowns, and visualizes the split between salary and variable pay. This helps you understand realistic earnings ranges before accepting a comp plan.

Can I compare two commission plans side by side?

Yes. The Compare Plans tab lets you select any two saved commission structures and see a line chart showing earnings at every revenue level from $0 to $500K. It automatically finds the crossover point where one plan becomes more lucrative than the other, plus a comparison table at key revenue milestones.

Is my commission data saved between sessions?

Yes. All commission structures and settings are saved to your browser's local storage and persist between sessions. You can also export your data as JSON or CSV for backup, import previously exported data, or share structures with teammates via the export/import feature.
