What You Need to Know Before Calculating
Three numbers drive everything:
- Total run length in linear feet (the perimeter of fence you’re installing)
- Fence height — standard residential heights are 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 feet (privacy fences are usually 6 ft, decorative fences 3–4 ft)

The default budget choice. Pressure-treated pine is rot-resistant, holds stain or paint well, and is widely available at any home improvement store. Lifespan: 15–20 years with annual maintenance (re-staining every 2–3 years).
Pros: Cheap, customizable, repairable plank by plank.
Cons: Wood moves with weather (warps, twists, splits over time), needs maintenance, has a finite lifespan.
Cedar ($25–$40/linear foot installed)
Mid-tier wood option with naturally rot- and insect-resistant properties. Doesn’t need pressure treatment. Weathers to a silver-gray over time (which some homeowners want, others stain to prevent).
Pros: Better appearance, more dimensionally stable than pine, can last 20–30 years.

Aluminum or Wrought-Iron Style ($30–$60/linear foot installed)
Decorative metal fencing — black powder-coated aluminum panels mimicking wrought iron, or actual wrought iron for high-end installs. Lifespan: 30+ years.
Pros: Distinctive appearance, never warps, low maintenance.
Cons: No privacy, expensive, custom-cut panels for non-standard runs cost extra.
Post Spacing: Why 8 Feet Is the Standard
Standard fence posts are spaced 8 feet on center because that’s the length of standard fence rails (also called “stringers”) sold at home improvement stores. Spacing posts at 8 feet means every rail is one piece, no cutting required, no waste. Spacing them at 6 or 10 feet means every rail must be cut to length — doable but slower and slightly wasteful.
When tighter spacing makes sense:

Hidden Costs People Forget
Permits ($25–$200)
Most municipalities require a fence permit for fences over 4 ft tall, fences within front-yard setbacks, or fences along property lines. Check your local code office. Permitting takes 1–2 weeks — build it into your timeline.
Property Survey ($300–$800 if you don’t already have one)
If you’re fencing along a property line, you need to know exactly where that line is.
