Letters vs. Characters
A letter is an alphabetic character: a through z (uppercase or lowercase). A character is anything that takes up a position in text: letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation marks, and special symbols.
For example, the sentence “Hello, World! 123” contains 10 letters (H-e-l-l-o-W-o-r-l-d), but 17 characters (including the comma, space, exclamation mark, space, and three digits).
