What Is the Human or AI Writing Challenge?
As AI-generated text becomes increasingly sophisticated, telling the difference between human and machine writing is one of the most important literacy skills of the decade. The Human or AI Writing Challenge turns that skill into a competitive, addictive quiz game with over 128 unique writing samples across 32 rounds.
Each round presents a topic — anything from a college application essay to a Yelp review of a mechanic — and shows you four writing samples. Two are written by actual humans with all their quirks, humor, and imperfections. Two are generated by AI with the subtle patterns and tells that characterize machine-written text. Your job is to figure out which is which.
After voting on all four samples, you'll see the answers revealed with staggered animations, along with detailed explanations of what made each sample identifiably human or AI. Over time, you'll develop a sharper eye for the patterns that distinguish authentic writing from generated text — a skill that's useful far beyond this game.
How to Play
Each round starts with a topic card showing the category and writing prompt. Hit "Start Round" to see the four samples. Read each one carefully — the differences can be subtle. Look for the specific details, voice, and patterns that distinguish human writers from AI.
Vote on each sample by tapping "Human" or "AI." You can change your vote on any sample until you hit "Reveal Results." Once all four samples have a vote, the reveal button activates. The answers appear one at a time with explanations of the tells in each sample.
Your score is tracked per round and across your entire session. The game includes 32 rounds with 128 samples covering academic writing, creative writing, business communication, social media posts, and news journalism. Rounds shuffle randomly, so every session feels fresh.
Pro tip: look for specificity. Humans name things — people, places, prices, dates. AI tends to stay vague and general. Humans also make weird observations, use humor in unexpected places, and take strong opinions. AI hedges, balances, and wraps up with a neat bow.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Human or AI Writing Challenge?
It's a free quiz game that tests your ability to distinguish human-written text from AI-generated text. Each round presents a topic and four writing samples — two written by real humans and two generated by AI. You read all four, vote on each one, and then see how you did. There are 32 rounds with 128 unique writing samples covering everything from college essays to Yelp reviews.
How accurate are the AI and human samples?
The samples are designed to be genuinely challenging. Human writing samples include authentic voice, specific details, humor, and natural imperfections. AI samples are well-written but include subtle tells like overuse of transition words, vague details, generic phrasing, and overly balanced perspectives. Some rounds are deliberately harder than others to keep you on your toes.
What are common tells that writing is AI-generated?
Common AI tells include: overuse of transition words like 'moreover,' 'furthermore,' and 'additionally'; phrases like 'it's worth noting' or 'in today's world'; uniform sentence length and paragraph structure; vague emotional language ('truly remarkable'); listing patterns; lack of specific personal details; and overly balanced both-sides framing that avoids taking a clear stance.
What makes human writing different from AI writing?
Human writing tends to include specific, sometimes irrelevant details that AI wouldn't invent (named people, exact prices, personal anecdotes). Humans use humor, sarcasm, and emotional specificity in ways that feel authentic. Human writing also has uneven rhythm — some very short sentences, some long ones — and often takes strong opinions rather than presenting perfectly balanced perspectives.
Does the game track my progress?
Yes. The game tracks your lifetime stats including total rounds played, total correct guesses, and overall accuracy percentage. These stats are stored locally in your browser and persist between sessions. Each round also shows how your guesses compare to other players.
