What Is Hangman?
Hangman is a free online word-guessing game that challenges you to figure out a hidden word by guessing one letter at a time — no signup, no download required. Each wrong guess adds a body part to the stick figure. Guess the word before the drawing is complete to win.
Hangman has been a classroom and family favorite for over a century, and “play hangman online” is searched over 300,000 times per month. It's one of the most effective vocabulary-building games for students — research from the Journal of Educational Psychology shows that game-based word exposure improves retention by up to 40% compared to rote memorization.
This version includes 12 word categories (Animals, Countries, Science, Movies, and more), 3 difficulty levels, 1,800+ words, a hint system, and streak tracking. All processing runs in your browser.
How to Play Hangman
Step 1: Choose your settings. Pick a word category (Animals, Countries, Science, Movies, Food & Drink, Sports, Technology, History, Music, Vocabulary, Professions, or Geography) and a difficulty level. Or select Random for a surprise.
Step 2: Study the blanks. Each dash represents one letter in the hidden word. Use the word length and category to start forming guesses.
Step 3: Guess letters. Click a letter on the on-screen keyboard or type it on your physical keyboard. Correct letters fill in all matching positions and turn green. Wrong letters add one body part to the hangman figure and turn red.
Step 4: Win or learn. You get 6 wrong guesses before the game ends. Use the Hint button if you're stuck (costs one guess). After each round, play another word or change your settings.
Key Features
12 Word Categories: Animals, Countries, Science, Movies, Food & Drink, Sports, Technology, History, Music, Vocabulary, Professions, and Geography. Each category has 50+ words per difficulty level for a total of 1,800+ unique words.
3 Difficulty Levels: Easy uses short, common words (4–6 letters). Medium uses moderate words (6–8 letters). Hard uses uncommon, longer words (8–12 letters). Difficulty affects both word length and obscurity.
SVG Hangman Drawing: The stick figure is drawn progressively with smooth opacity transitions. Six body parts correspond to six wrong guesses — head, body, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg.

Full Keyboard Support: Play with the on-screen letter buttons or type directly on a physical keyboard. Letter buttons are 40px+ for comfortable tapping on mobile devices.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best strategy for hangman?
Start with the most common English letters: E, A, R, I, O, T, N, S. These appear in more words than any others. Guess vowels early to reveal the word’s shape, then fill in consonants based on the pattern.
What are the hardest words in hangman?
Words with uncommon letters like J, Z, X, Q are toughest. Short words are also harder because there are fewer positions to reveal. “Jazz,” “jinx,” “quiz,” and “lynx” are classic hard hangman words.
How many guesses do you get in hangman?
Standard hangman gives you 6 wrong guesses — one for each body part (head, body, two arms, two legs). Some versions allow 7–8 by adding hands or feet. This version uses the standard 6.
Can kids play hangman online?
Yes — the Easy difficulty uses simple, common words appropriate for ages 6+. Categories like Animals and Food are kid-friendly. The game builds spelling and vocabulary skills while being genuinely fun.
Is hangman educational?
Absolutely. Hangman reinforces spelling patterns, builds vocabulary in specific topics (science, geography, history), and develops deductive reasoning. Teachers commonly use it as a classroom warm-up activity.
