What Is the Book Tracker?

This book tracker is a free, private reading log that runs entirely in your browser. Add books to your library, organize them by status — currently reading, completed, or want to read — and track your reading habits over time with streaks, goals, and detailed stats.

Unlike apps like Goodreads that require an account and share your data with advertisers, this tool stores everything in your browser's localStorage. No signup, no tracking, no data collection. Your reading life is yours alone.

How to Build a Reading Habit

The single most effective way to read more is to track your reading consistently. Research from the University of Chicago shows that people who log their habits are 42% more likely to stick with them. This tracker gives you daily streak tracking, a heat map of your reading activity, and an annual goal with pace indicators — all designed to keep you motivated.

Start small. Commit to reading just 20 pages or 15 minutes per day. Use the "I Read Today" button to log your sessions and watch your streak grow. The goal is not to read fast but to read regularly. Even 15 minutes a day adds up to roughly 20 books per year.

Keep a "Want to Read" list so you always have your next book ready. One of the biggest barriers to consistent reading is not knowing what to read next. Whenever someone recommends a book or you see an interesting title, add it to your list immediately.

Setting a Reading Goal

An annual reading goal gives you a clear target to work toward. The average American reads about 12 books per year, so setting a goal of 24 books (two per month) is ambitious but achievable for most people. The tracker shows whether you are ahead or behind pace throughout the year.

Don't set your goal so high that it becomes stressful. The point is to enjoy reading, not to turn it into a chore. If you finish a 200-page novel and a 900-page epic in the same month, they both count as one book. Consider mixing shorter books with longer ones to maintain momentum and variety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my reading data stored on a server?

No. All your books, reading sessions, and settings are stored in your browser's localStorage. Nothing is ever uploaded. This means your data is completely private, but you should use the Export buttons to back up your library if you clear your browser data.

Can I track books across multiple devices?

Since data is stored locally in your browser, it does not automatically sync between devices. However, you can export your library as JSON on one device and import it on another by copying the data into localStorage. We recommend exporting regularly as a backup.

How does the reading streak work?

Click the 'I Read Today' button each day you read. The tracker counts consecutive days to calculate your current streak. If you miss a day, the streak resets to zero but your best streak is always saved. The heat map shows your reading activity over the past 90 days.
