Counting Business Days

Business days — also called working days — are the backbone of professional scheduling. Contracts specify delivery in "5 business days," legal deadlines are counted in business days, and shipping estimates exclude weekends. Getting the count wrong can mean missed deadlines or incorrect expectations.

The difference between calendar days and business days is significant. A 30-day calendar month typically contains only 21-23 business days. If a holiday falls within the period, it could be even fewer. This calculator gives you the exact count instantly.

When "Exclude US holidays" is checked, the calculator removes 10 federal holidays from the count. Both fixed holidays (Christmas, July 4th) and floating holidays (Thanksgiving, MLK Day) are handled correctly for any year. The mini calendar highlights exactly which days are business days, weekends, and holidays.

Common use cases include estimating project timelines, calculating legal notice periods, planning shipping and delivery schedules, and determining when a payment or response is due. In legal contexts especially, getting business day counts right is critical.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a business day?

Monday through Friday, excluding Saturday and Sunday. When 'Exclude US holidays' is checked, 10 federal holidays are also excluded: New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Why do business days matter?

Many contracts, legal deadlines, shipping estimates, and government processes are measured in business days rather than calendar days. '5 business days' could be a full week or more depending on weekends and holidays.

What about state or company-specific holidays?

This calculator uses the 10 US federal holidays. If your organization observes additional holidays (like state holidays or floating holidays), subtract those manually from the business day count.

Does the calendar view show which days are excluded?

Yes. The mini calendar highlights business days in green, weekends in gray, and holidays in red. This gives you a visual overview of exactly which days are counted and which are excluded.

How accurate is the holiday detection?

The calculator correctly handles both fixed-date holidays (Christmas, Independence Day) and floating holidays (Thanksgiving = 4th Thursday in November, MLK Day = 3rd Monday in January). It calculates the exact date for each year.
