Roofing contractors and confident DIYers both use the same fundamental unit: the square. One roofing square equals 100 square feet of finished roof surface. Everything else, including shingle bundles, underlayment rolls, and flashing footage, flows from that number. Get the square count right and your material order will be close. Get it wrong and you are either driving back to the lumber yard mid-job or eating the cost of a pallet you cannot return.

Step 1: Measure the Footprint, Not the Slope

Start on the ground. Measure the outer dimensions of the building at the foundation or eaves line and calculate the horizontal footprint of each roof section. You do not need to climb up and measure along the actual slope at this stage. A simple rectangle is length times width. For an L-shaped house, break it into two rectangles and add them together.

If you have a basic tape measure and a helper, you can get an accurate footprint in under twenty minutes. Once you have that number in square feet, plug it into the roofing calculator or continue through the manual steps below.

Step 2: Apply the Pitch Multiplier

The footprint area is a horizontal projection. The actual roof surface is larger because it slopes. Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run: a 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Each pitch has a corresponding multiplier you apply to your footprint area to get the true sloped surface area.

  • Flat to 2/12: multiplier 1.02
  • 3/12: multiplier 1.03
  • 4/12: multiplier 1.05
  • 5/12: multiplier 1.08
  • 6/12: multiplier 1.12
  • 7/12: multiplier 1.16
  • 8/12: multiplier 1.20
  • 9/12: multiplier 1.25

Example: a house with a 1,200 sq ft footprint and a 6/12 pitch has a true roof area of 1,200 x 1.12 = 1,344 sq ft, or 13.44 squares.

Step 3: Add Overhangs

The footprint measurement ends at the exterior wall. The actual roof surface extends past that to the eave overhang, typically 12 to 24 inches on each side. Measure the overhang on all sides and add that area back in before you calculate squares. On a standard ranch house with 12-inch overhangs on all four sides, this can easily add 80 to 120 sq ft. Skipping this step is one of the most common under-ordering mistakes.

Step 4: Convert Square Feet to Roofing Squares

Divide your adjusted sloped surface area by 100 to get squares.

  1. Footprint area (sq ft): 1,200
  2. Plus overhangs (sq ft): 100
  3. Subtotal: 1,300 sq ft
  4. Times pitch multiplier (6/12): 1.12
  5. True roof area: 1,456 sq ft
  6. Divided by 100: 14.56 squares

Step 5: Calculate Shingle Bundles

Standard three-tab and architectural shingles come in bundles. It takes three bundles to cover one square for most three-tab products. Heavier architectural shingles often require four bundles per square. Check the bundle label, which will state the coverage area in square feet. Always confirm before you order.

  • 14.56 squares x 3 bundles = 43.7 bundles (three-tab)
  • 14.56 squares x 4 bundles = 58.2 bundles (heavy architectural)

Round up to whole bundles. You cannot buy a fraction of a bundle at most suppliers.

Step 6: Add a Waste Factor

No roof installs perfectly without cuts, especially around hips, valleys, skylights, dormers, and chimneys. Every cut piece generates scrap. Standard waste factors by roof complexity:

  • Simple gable roof, no penetrations: 5 to 8 percent
  • One or two dormers or a chimney: 10 to 12 percent
  • Hip roof: 12 to 15 percent
  • Complex roof with multiple valleys and dormers: 15 to 20 percent

Apply the waste factor to your bundle count. For 44 bundles on a moderate hip roof at 13 percent waste: 44 x 1.13 = 49.7, round up to 50 bundles.

Buying slightly more than you need is nearly always the right call. Leftover shingles serve as repair stock if a storm damages a few courses years down the road. The cost of a partial return is nearly always less than a second delivery charge and the labor of waiting for materials mid-job.

Step 7: Estimate Underlayment and Ice Shield

Underlayment (felt or synthetic) is sold in rolls. A standard 15-lb felt roll covers approximately 4 squares (400 sq ft). Synthetic underlayment rolls vary widely, commonly 10 to 20 squares per roll. Check the label.

Ice and water shield is applied at eaves, valleys, and around penetrations. Most building codes require it from the eave up to a point 24 inches inside the interior wall line. In cold climates, some codes require it on the full lower third of the roof. Measure the total eave length and multiply by the required coverage width (typically 3 to 6 feet) to get the ice shield area in square feet.

Step 8: Ridge Cap, Starter Strip, and Flashing

Ridge cap shingles cover the peak of every ridge and hip. Measure the total linear footage of all ridges and hips combined. A bundle of ridge cap typically covers 33 linear feet.

Starter strip runs along every eave and rake edge. Measure total eave plus rake length and order accordingly. Most starter strip rolls cover 100 to 105 linear feet.

Flashing requirements depend on the number and type of penetrations. Step flashing at a chimney, for example, requires one piece of flashing per course of shingles on each side of the chimney. Measure chimney perimeter and divide by your shingle exposure to get piece count.

  1. Measure building footprint (all planes).
  2. Add eave overhangs to each edge.
  3. Multiply by pitch factor to get true surface area.
  4. Divide by 100 to convert to squares.
  5. Multiply by bundles per square (3 or 4).
  6. Apply waste factor based on roof complexity.
  7. Calculate underlayment rolls from square count.
  8. Measure eave length for ice shield.
  9. Measure ridge and hip length for ridge cap.
  10. Measure eave and rake perimeter for starter strip.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Ordering Errors

  • Measuring only the ceiling area: The ceiling area of a room is always smaller than the sloped roof above it. Always start from the exterior footprint.
  • Ignoring pitch: A flat 1,500 sq ft footprint under a steep 12/12 pitch is actually 2,115 sq ft of roof surface. The pitch multiplier is not optional.
  • Using the wrong bundle count: Architectural shingles vary by manufacturer. A bundle labeled "33.3 sq ft coverage" means you need exactly 3 bundles per square, but a bundle labeled "25 sq ft" means four bundles. Read the label every time.
