What Is Backgammon?

Backgammon is a classic two-player board game where you roll dice and race to move all 15 of your checkers off the board before your opponent. The game combines luck (dice rolls) with deep strategy (which moves to make), creating endlessly varied gameplay.

This free online version lets you play against an AI opponent at three difficulty levels. The Easy AI is great for learning the rules, while the Hard AI evaluates every possible move combination and plays at an advanced level. Every game includes the doubling cube for an extra layer of strategy.

How to Play Backgammon

Roll and move. Click Roll Dice to get two numbers. Each die is a separate move. You must use both if possible. Doubles give you four moves.

Hit blots and block points. Landing on a single enemy checker sends it to the bar. Build consecutive blocked points to trap your opponent.

Bear off to win. Get all your checkers to your home board, then roll matching numbers to remove them. First to clear all 15 wins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I play backgammon against the computer?

Yes. Choose from three AI difficulty levels — Easy for beginners, Medium for casual play, or Hard for a real challenge. The AI plays full backgammon rules including hitting, bar re-entry, bearing off, and strategic doubling cube usage.

What is the doubling cube in backgammon?

The doubling cube is a die-shaped marker that tracks the stakes. Before rolling, either player can propose doubling the stakes. The opponent can accept (play continues at double value) or forfeit. It adds a strategic gambling element to the game.

How do I bear off checkers?

Once all 15 of your checkers are in your home board (points 1-6), you can start bearing off. Roll a number matching a point to remove a checker from that point. If the number is higher than your highest occupied point, bear off from the highest point. First to bear off all 15 wins.

Does this work on mobile phones?

Yes. The board scales to fit any screen size. Tap a checker to select it, then tap a highlighted destination to move. Works on all phones and tablets.
